The Wonderful Soup Stone

I (F)swear you could taste the (C)chicken and tomatoes
And the (F)noodles and the marrow(C)bone
But it (F)really wasn't nothing but some (C)water and potatoes
And the (G)wonderful, wonderful (C)soupstone

(C)Hanging from a string in my (F)mama's (C)kitchen, (G)back in the hard time (C)days
Was a little ol' stone 'bout the (F)size of an apple
it was (D)smooth and worn and (G)grey
There (C)wasn't much food in my (F)mama's (C)kitchen, so when(G)ever things got (C)tight
Mama (F)boiled up some water, (C)put in the stone and said 
Let's (D)have some soup to(G)night"

It had been in the family for a (F)whole lotta (C)years, 
so we (G)knew it was a nourishing (C)thing
And I remember mama, as she (F)stirred it in the (C)water, 
and (D)we could all hear her (G)sing
"It’s a (C)magical stone and as (F)long as we (C)got it, 
we'll (G)never have a hungry (C)night
Just (F)add a little love to the (C)wonderful soupstone 
and (D)everything will be al(G)right"

So it carried us all through the (F)darkening (C)days, 
'til (G)finally the sunshine (C)came
And the soupstone started into (F)gathering (C)dust,
but it (D)hung there just the (G)same
And (C)ever since then the (F)food's been (C)plenty,
but (G)every now and then I (C)find
That (F)mama in the kitchen with the (C)wonderful soupstone, 
(D)drifts across my (G)mind
