Biography
Lynyrd Skynyrd formed in Jacksonville when childhood friends Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns pooled their talents. The band drew inspiration from the Beatles, Free and blues, and made a name for themselves under various band names before breaking through in 1968 as Lynyrd Skynyrd after winning a 'battle of the bands' — named after their former gym teacher Leonard Skinner. With their distinctive triple lead guitar and songs like 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Freebird', they became the ambassadors of southern rock and classic rock.
The band experienced both peaks and setbacks: singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines died in 1977 in a plane crash, but Lynyrd Skynyrd was revived and released countless albums afterwards. In 2006 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. About the music
Their music was strongly influenced by bands such as the Beatles and Free, and they were also avid listeners of the Blues.
Around 1960 they changed their name to, for example, The Noble Five or One Percent.
Under those names they played throughout Jacksonville in various neighbourhood venues and clubs. In 1968 the five-piece won a 'battle of the bands', after which they really broke through with their songs Michelle and Need all my friends.
After the battle of the bands they officially became Lynyrd Skynyrd, a name derived from their PE teacher Leonard Skinner, from whom some band members took classes. Later the band would produce many hits, including Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird, the latter even reaching 3rd place in the guitar solo top hundred.
In the later period more band members joined, including a keyboardist, and they became famous for their so-called 'triple lead guitar'. The band was struck by tragedy on 20 October 1977 when Ronnie van Zant and Steve Gaines died in a plane crash.
Later they managed to pick up the threads again and released many more albums, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
