Biography
Eric Clapton, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, was born on 30 March 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, England. His father, Canadian military officer Edward Walter Fryer, was already married and returned to Canada before Eric was born. His mother, Patricia Molly Clapton, was only 16 years old at the time. Eric was raised by his grandparents and grew up believing his mother was his sister. It was not until he turned nine that he discovered the truth about his family.
Eric was a quiet and withdrawn boy, but the rise of rock and roll in the 1950s inspired him to learn guitar. On his 13th birthday, he received his first guitar and began teaching himself, focusing particularly on blues music. His love for the blues remained a thread running through his entire career.
The Roosters (1963): Clapton's first band was a short-lived blues group.
Casey Jones & The Engineers: Clapton played in this band for only a few weeks.
The Yardbirds (1963-1965): Here Clapton made a name for himself as "Slowhand" thanks to his virtuoso playing. He left the band because they moved toward pop music.
John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (1965-1966): Here Clapton fully developed his talent and became recognised as a master of blues guitar.
In 1966, Clapton founded the legendary band Cream with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Cream combined blues, rock and jazz and was known for their long, improvised performances. Their hits such as "Sunshine of Your Love" and "White Room" made them immensely popular. Despite their success, the band lasted only two years due to artistic and personal conflicts.
After Cream, Clapton formed Blind Faith with Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker and Rick Grech. This supergroup released only one album before Clapton withdrew. He then played with Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, which influenced his style.
In 1970, Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos and released the iconic album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The title track "Layla" was inspired by his unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, who was then married to his friend George Harrison.
Clapton struggled with heroin addiction in the 1970s, but with help from friends like Pete Townshend of The Who, he overcame his addiction. He rediscovered his creative power and shifted his focus to simpler songs. In 1978, he married Pattie Boyd.
The 1990s brought both success and tragedy. In 1991, Clapton lost friends, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, in a plane crash. Shortly after, his four-year-old son Conor died after falling from a window. Clapton processed this immense grief in the beautiful "Tears in Heaven", one of his most personal and moving songs.
With more than six decades in the music industry, Eric Clapton is one of the most respected and influential guitarists ever. He is known for his compelling guitar playing and his profound contribution to blues and rock music. Clapton has won multiple Grammy Awards and is the only artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times: as a solo artist, and as a member of both The Yardbirds and Cream.
His nickname "Slowhand" came from the slow handclapping of the audience during performances while Clapton replaced a broken string on the spot.
