Biography
Bread was an American soft rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1968. The group consisted of David Gates (vocals, guitar, keyboards), James Griffin (vocals, guitar), Robb Royer (bass, guitar) and later Mike Botts (drums) and Larry Knechtel (bass, keyboards). Bread became known for their melodious ballads and harmonious vocal lines, which were characteristic of the soft rock of the 1970s. Their breakthrough came in 1970 with the hit Make It with You , which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. The band then scored a series of hits such as Everything I Own , Baby I'm-a Want You and If . Despite their success, there were tensions within the group, which led to them breaking up for the first time in 1973. Later reunions followed, but their greatest impact remained in the early 1970s. Bread's music is still appreciated for its romantic lyrics, timeless melodies and the role they played in defining soft rock as a genre.
