Biography
Damien Rice is an Irish singer-songwriter. He is known for his fragile songs that he performs with minimal instruments. Rice began in the band 'Juniper', which is known for the song 'weatherman'. In 1999 he left this band, after which the remaining members continued under the name 'Bell X1'. Rice moved from Ireland to Tuscany (Italy), after which he travels through Europe as a street musician. After a year he returns, determined to release the songs he wrote during his travels as a demo. He borrows money from friends and uses it to pay for his demo, which he sends to producer David Arnold. Arnold was charmed and lent him enough money to buy studio equipment. In 2001 the first single 'The Blowers Daughter' is released, which is used for the soundtrack of the film 'Closer'. The single is well received and performances follow. Working independently, Rice continues to complete a full album, which is released in February 2002 under the title 'O'. He did not want to involve major record labels with the album because he was afraid they would have an influence on his music.
In 2006 Damien Rice releases the album '9'. The single '9 Crimes' from this album becomes a hit.
In March 2007 Lisa Hannigan, who provided guitar and vocals on most of the singles (including '9 Crimes'), leaves the band.
