Biography
Maanu is the project of Maan de Steenwinkel, a Dutch singer who works in the spheres of indian indie, desi and hindi indie. Born in Utrecht and raised in North Holland, Maanu broke through by winning The Voice of Holland in 2016 — a moment that firmly shaped her career. Following her victory came hit singles such as 'Perfect World' and 'Ride It' in the Dutch Top 40, followed by a debut album titled 'Onverstaanbaar' in 2021.
Maanu's unique sound made its mark in the Dutch pop scene where she was nominated and awarded Best Female Singer of 2019 by 100%NL. On Gitaartabs you can find two of her songs to play yourself — ideal for discovering and playing along with the melodies and chords of her indiepop arrangements.
About the music
Youth
Maan was born in Utrecht but moved to Bergen, North Holland at the age of one. Her father is a director and her mother is a handicrafts teacher. Her father is known for television shows such as Jinek, Pauw and De Wereld Draait Door. Maan studied at Het Murmellius Gymnasium in Alkmaar.
In 2016 Maan participated in the sixth season of The Voice of Holland. During her blind audition all coaches turned around. She ultimately chose to join Marco Borsato's team. She went on to become the winner of The Voice of Holland 2016.
Career
After winning The Voice of Holland, Maan released the single 'Perfect World'. It was well received and entered the Dutch Top 40. Her follow-up single 'Ride It' also scored a place in the Dutch Top 40.
Maan performs six nights as a guest artist at the concert series 'Toppers in Concert' in Rotterdam Ahoy. The toppers release the Christmas song 'Een Heel Gelukkig Kerstfeest' in which Maan has a supporting role.
In 2017 Maan is a guest at 'Beste Zangers', an AVROTROS programme. She performs among other songs Kenny B's 'Jij bent de liefde' and scores a hit with it. On the iTunes charts the song even reaches number 1.
At the end of 2017 Maan started her own club tour. She performed six shows throughout the Netherlands. Her tour began in The Hague on 1 December. In 2019 she did another club tour with six shows.
In 2019 Maan is nominated for the 100%NL award 'Best Female Singer of the Year'. Og3ne and Ilse de Lange were also nominated. Maan takes home the prize and can call herself 'Best Female Singer of 2019'.
In December 2021 Maan releases her debut album called 'Onverstaanbaar'. The album consists of twelve tracks, including 'Ze huilt maar ze lacht' which has more than 30 million streams and earns gold status. The album enters at number 1 on the 'Album top 100' list. A month later Maan wins an Edison in the category 'Best pop single of 2019'.

On 29 September 2018 Maan released the single 'Lief zoals je bent'. The track is the second single from her EP 'Waar ga je heen'. The song was written among others by Anouk and Paul Sinha. The single earned gold status in the Netherlands.
Hij is van mij
'Hij is van mij' is a track by Kris Kross Amsterdam featuring Maan, Tabitha and Bizzey. The song is about the sorrow of two women in love with the same man. They think he loves her more than the other. The track reaches first place on the Dutch Top 40, the Single Top 100 and the Mega Top 50.
Blijven slapen
Maan and Snelle wrote the song 'Blijven slapen' together. The track is about a date. The song is part of Snelle's album 'Lars'. In April 2021 Snelle and Maan won the 3FM award in the category 'best collaboration' and in June 2021 the track received platinum status.
