Marilyn Manson is an American shock rock band. The band's singer also goes by the stage name Marilyn Manson. The name Marilyn Manson is a combination of Marilyn Monroe (actress and singer) and Charles Manson (rapist, murderer, and psychopath). Brian Hugh Warner and Scott Mitchell felt cast out by society and were regarded as freaks when they formed the band Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. The band's goal was to push past the censorship boundary and make music that was not politically correct. They tried to build popularity by distributing cassettes with their music and handing out flyers. Through these efforts they performed often, though the shows were horrifying to watch because Brian engaged in self-mutilation on stage and frequently became ill from nerves. At that time the band also had no drummer yet; this was replaced by a drum machine.
