About the music
Phil Collins was born Philip David Charles Collins. He began his professional career as a drummer in the band Flaming Youth. But he became truly famous during his time with Genesis, a progressive rock band known for songs like I Can't Dance, Mama and Jesus He Knows Me. At first, Collins was only the drummer and backing vocalist. When Peter Gabriel, then the lead singer and frontman, left, Genesis faced a problem. They couldn't find a suitable replacement. At one point they had already auditioned around 150 candidates to sing the new material they had ready. Because no suitable candidate emerged, Phil Collins decided to sing the songs himself, for lack of a better option. Because this worked so well, Collins became the new singer and frontman.
Genesis became a world-famous band, but Collins' solo career is also impressive. With songs like In The Air Tonight, Easy Lover (with Philip Bailey) and You Can't Hurry Love, he has numerous number 1 hits to his name. He has also played with many well-known musicians, and one of them is worth mentioning on this guitar site: Eric Clapton. In 1986, Collins performed together with Eric Clapton (guitarist), Nathan East (bassist, who has often worked with Collins, including on "Live and Loose in Paris") and Greg Phillinganes (pianist).
Phil Collins also composes a great deal of music for musicals. For example, he provided the musical Tarzan with wonderful music. He also wrote the title song for the animated film Brother Bear.
Additionally, Phil Collins has appeared in several films and television series. The best-known of these is Miami Vice.
Phil Collins is known as a level-headed and quiet person. Alcohol and women are not his interests. Although he has been through several relationships, he has remained grounded. As mentioned earlier, Collins started out as a drummer. For instance, on the DVD "Live and Loose in Paris," you can see and hear on the songs "In the Air Tonight" and the live number "Timbantiocha" that he is a gifted drummer. However, he is also extremely impressive as a vocalist. On top of that, he is also a pianist and an actor.
Phil Collins can rightly be called a level-headed multi-talent.
