Biography
The Foo Fighters were formed after Nirvana disbanded following Kurt Cobain's death. Dave Grohl released a self-titled album under the name Foo Fighters in 1995, a collection of songs he had written during his time with Nirvana. Dave performed all the bass, guitar and drum parts himself for what he initially regarded as a demo.
About the music
In the months that followed, he formed a band: bassist Nate Mendel, drummer William Goldsmith (both former Sunny Day Real Estate) and guitarist Pat Smear (ex-Germ, who provided Nirvana with reinforcing guitar sound during the In Utero tour) gave the Foo Fighters a face.
The second album, no longer leaning towards grunge, The Colour And The Shape, saw the light of day in 1997. Goldsmith is replaced later that year by Taylor Hawkins, who had already made his mark with Alanis Morissette. Smear also leaves the group.
Grohl has nothing left to lose, as evidenced by the title of the third album, which at times sounds pop-like, There Is Nothing Left To Lose. It features hits such as Learn To Fly, Aurora and Break Out. The latter also appeared on the soundtrack of the film Me, Myself & Irenes.
On the fourth Foo Fighters album One by One we hear guitarist Chris Shiflett for the first time, who had been supporting the Foo's live for several years. Previously, Shiflett played in the punk band No Use For A Name. He is also guitarist in the cover band Me First And The Gimme Gimmes and in his own band Jackson United.
In June 2005, the double album In Your Honor was released. The first CD consists of rock and the second part is acoustic. On the album, the Foo Fighters are supported by John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age) and Norah Jones.
On 31 January 2006, the Foo Fighters were in the Netherlands to promote In Your Honor. This concert was held at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. In Belgium, the Foo Fighters played to a sold-out Vorst Nationaal.
In June of that same year, the band played an exuberant concert for as many as 85,000 fans in Hyde Park in London.
