Biography
Franz Ferdinand was founded in 2001 in Glasgow. Their intention was "to make music that girls could dance to". The band debuted in 2003 with the EP Darts of Pleasure. Their first album, Franz Ferdinand, came out in February 2004. It featured highly danceable guitar rock, with which the group, following in the footsteps of the Strokes and dance-punk bands such as The Rapture, Yeahyeahyeahs and Liars, drew on Television, Roxy Music and the post-punk bands of the 1980s. Franz Ferdinand belongs among the new British bands that created a danceable form of rock music, such as Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys. Five singles were released from this debut album ("Darts of Pleasure", "Take Me Out", "The Dark of the Matinée", "Michael" and "This Fire"). The first two reached the top 10 of the British charts. That same year, Franz Ferdinand played at various major festivals, including Lowlands, Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop. They were also the opening act for U2 during their Vertigo Tour.
About the music
In 2005 they released their new album "You Could Have It So Much Better". By that time, four singles had already been released from it: "Do You Want To?", "Walk Away", "The Fallen" and "Eleanor Put Your Boots On".
In 2004 they won the Mercury Prize and in 2005 the band won two Brit Awards (best British band, best British rock band) and was nominated for three others (best British album, best British breakthrough, best British live act).
In mid-2008 they release a new album.
