Marco Borsato

In 1994 his Dutch-language hit Dromen zijn bedrog (a cover of the Italian song Storie di tutti i giorni) stood for 12 weeks at number one in the Dutch charts. He made it into the Guinness Book of Records. Only Que si que no by Jody Bernal has held the top spot longer, for 15 weeks. A few months later, the song Waarom nou jij also reached number one. In 1996 he performed at Parkpop in The Hague. And in 1998 he scored another number 1 hit with De bestemming (also a cover, of the Celtic song The Destiny). At the end of 1999 his song Binnen also achieved this status.

On the occasion of the wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander and Maxima Zorreguieta, Borsato released the single Lopen op het water together with Sita. February 1, 2002 was the day of the National Wedding Festival. At the Amsterdam ArenA, Borsato and Sita performed the song live. The single stayed at number one for four weeks.

On January 24, 2004, his song Afscheid nemen bestaat niet reached number 1 in the Mega Top 50. A couple of weeks later, the song Voorbij, a duet with singer Do, rose to number one in its second week.

In June 2004 Borsato gave six sold-out concerts at De Kuip. One of the artists who performed there as a guest was rapper Ali B. Together they sang an arrangement of the song Wat zou je doen/Nooit meer een morgen. On September 25, 2004 this live version came out of nowhere to number 1. The proceeds from this single went to War Child. To date, Borsato has won all versions of the TMF Awards as Best Singer National. He also won the Flemish TMF Award for Best International Singer in 2004 and 2005. On March 19, 2006 Borsato received the Radio 2 broadcast time award. Various colleagues were present and sang songs by him and themselves. This show was broadcast live on radio 2 and a week later on television.

In May 2006 Borsato began selling his tour "Symphonica in Rosso", which took place that same year between October 20 and November 4 at the Gelredome in Arnhem. The first 4 concerts were quickly sold out and eventually 10 sold-out concerts were given. With Rood, Borsato achieved his tenth number 1 hit in the Dutch charts. After the Beatles, Borsato is the 2nd artist with so many number 1 hits to his name. The Beatles had eleven more. In the Single Top 100, Rood was his first hit to debut at number one. It is the best-selling single of 2006 in the Netherlands. This single by Borsato was also very successful in Belgium. The new record for Borsato was that in 2006 he spent a total of a whole year at number one in the Dutch charts: "Secretly I'm quite impressed by that!" he wrote on his website.

Later in 2006 Borsato recorded a duet with British singer Lucie Silvas, called Everytime I think of you (originally by The Babys). This is his 11th number 1 hit. Through this he set another record; his last 7 singles all reached number one. Currently Marco is working on the film Wit Licht, in which he acts for the first time. In addition to this film, a new single with the name Wit Licht was released in April. In May 2008 it stood for 2 weeks at number one in the Single Top 100. With this he has spent a total of 56 weeks at number one in the sales charts. His new album, which comes out later this year, is also called Wit Licht (album), as are his series of concerts at the Gelredome, on October 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18, 20 and 21.

Borsato has been an ambassador for War Child Netherlands since 1998. He supports War Child through fundraising and promotional activities and visits projects. He wrote travel reports about his visits to, among others, Ingushetia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. The song 'De Speeltuin' was written for War Child; now an ode to peace for children. Borsato has committed himself in many ways to bring attention to the situation of war children and the work of War Child.

In February 2004 he traveled to Afghanistan for documentary recordings. In June 2004, during his 16 performances at De Kuip and at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, he paused the show to draw attention to War Child. He was also an important force behind the organization of the Friends for War Child concerts at Ahoy. Together with Ali B. he was responsible for the hit single "Wat zou je doen", the proceeds of which went to War Child.
