Marilyn Manson is een samenvoeging van de Marilyn Monroe(actrice en zangeres) en Charles Manson(verkrachter,moordenaar en psychopaat). Brian Hugh Warner en Scott Mitchell voelen zich verstoten uit de maatschapij en worden beschouwd als freaks als ze de band Marilyn Manson and the spooky kids oprichten. Het doel van de band is voorbij de cencuur grens te komen, om muziek te maken die niet politiek correct was. Ze probeerde populariteit te werven door cassetes te vespreiden met hun muziek en flyers uit te delen. Ze traden door deze acties vaak op alleen waren de optredes afschuwlijk om aan te zien omdat Brian aan zelfverminking deed op het podium en vaak moest kotsen van de nerveusiteit. Er was op dat moment ook nog geen drummer, deze werd vervangen door een drummachine. Niet veel later krijgt de band een label, een manger, een drummer en een nieuwe bassist.
