Biography
Michael Steven Bublé grew up in Burnaby, British Columbia, surrounded by his grandfather's jazz albums. That influence was decisive: his grandfather introduced him to Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra and encouraged him to become a singer. After winning the Canadian Youth Talent Search at 17, a long road to breakthrough followed—with performances as Elvis and in revues—until a CD moment at a corporate event connected Bublé with producer David Foster and set his career in motion.
Bublé's first album reached the top 10 in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. With his third album Call Me Irresponsible (2007) he climbed further with the hit "Everything" in the Dutch charts. Michael Bublé was born in Burnaby, British Columbia. He grew up listening to his grandfather's jazz albums.
On his website, he emphasises the importance of his grandfather in encouraging his musical talents. He says among other things that his grandfather was his best friend, and the one who opened the world of music that had actually passed by his generation. Because of him, Bublé wanted to become a singer. He grew up with music from artists including Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Bublé's grandfather brought him to a talent hunt in Vancouver, where he won but was later disqualified because he was too young. This did not discourage him; when he was 17, he won first prize in the Canadian Youth Talent Search.
In the years that followed, he had a musical career that didn't really take off. He played Elvis in a Diner show and sang in a revue called Forever Swing. He recorded a couple of albums, one as a gift for his grandfather. In 2000 he received two Genie Award nominations for two songs he wrote for the film Here's to Life, featuring among others Canadian Eric McCormack.
A performance at a corporate event led to Michael Bublé's breakthrough. At this event, he gave a CD to Michael McSweeney, an acquaintance of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. McSweeney gave the CD to the Prime Minister, after which Bublé was invited as a singer at his daughter's wedding in 2000. There he sang the song Mack the Knife by Kurt Weill.
The singer was introduced there to David Foster, a well-known producer. He signed a contract which brought him to the 143 label. There he released his first self-titled album Michael Bublé.
The album contains many well-known songs such as The Way You Look Tonight and Moondance (Van Morrison). On the song How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (originally by the Bee Gees), Barry Gibb sings background vocals. Michael Bublé came out in 2003 and quickly entered the Canadian album chart. The album achieved platinum status and reached number 1 in Australia.
His songs Kissing a Fool (originally George Michael) and How Can You Mend A Broken Heart reached the top 30 in America. His third single Sway even reached the top 20 in Australia in a remix version by Junkie XL.
At the 2004 Juno Awards, Bublé won the award for Best New Artist. His album was nominated for Album of the Year, but did not win that prize. He released a Christmas CD; Let it Snow, in 2003. The title track reached the top 40 in Australia (ironically, it was the middle of summer there at the time). A live album followed, with video that reached the top 10 in the American video charts.
This was followed by a world tour and he appeared several times on television, among others on NBC's Today Show, where he sang a duet with host Katie Couric. The second album It's Time was hugely successful. It reached number 7 on the American album chart.
The album was also successful in the Netherlands, reaching second position. The album contains covers of the Beatles and Ray Charles, as well as his hit single Home. Michael Bublé has since sold more than ten million albums worldwide. His popularity continues to grow; he has fans from Europe to Brazil.
His manager is Bruce Allen, also the manager of Bryan Adams. Michael Bublé was engaged for a long time to Debbie Timuss, an actress, dancer and singer. They appeared together in the musicals Red Rock Diner in 1996 and Forever Swing in 1998. Timuss is also the background vocalist on Bublé's song It's Time.
The song Home was written for her, when Bublé was in Italy. She also has a role in the music video for that song. They ended their relationship in November 2005. Michael now has a new relationship, with Emily Blunt, an English actress.
