Biography
Racoon was formed in 1996 when Bart van der Weide and Dennis Huige left their hardcore band Vict'em. Bart wrote songs, Dennis played guitar, and in 1997 Stefan de Kroon (bass guitar) and Paul Bukkens (drums) completed the line-up. The Dutch nederpop band released their demo 'It's an ice cream day', which was well received. Their debut album 'Till Monkeys Fly' (2000) reached the Top 10, but a real breakthrough came with 'Another Day' (2005), which stayed in the charts for well over a year and brought Racoon to major festivals like Pinkpop.
With albums like 'Before You Leave' (2008), 'Liverpool Rain' (2011) and songs in Dutch such as 'Oceaan' (2012), Racoon evolved from a rock group into a pop band with an enduring Dutch and Hollands character. The guitar parts of Dennis Huige are a strong presence in their work — play along with the 26 songs by Racoon on Gitaartabs and discover the chords of your favourite songs.
About the music
Origins
In 1996, Bart and Dennis left the hardcore band Vict'em. Dennis continued to play guitar and Bart began writing songs. From that moment on, they called themselves 'Racoon'. They contributed three songs to a compilation CD by the Nationaal Pop Instituut.
In 1997, Stefan de Kroon (bass guitar) and Paul Bukkens (drums) joined the band. The band released a demo called ' It's an ice cream day '. The demo was well received.
Career
In 1999, Racoon performed at the Noorderslagfestival. As a result, several record labels wanted to work with the band. Eventually they signed a contract with Sony's S.M.A.R.T label.
In 2000, their debut album 'Till Monkeys Fly' was released. The album spent ten weeks in the 'Top 10'.
In 2002, Sony ended its contract with Racoon. During their tour, the band searched for a new record label. Eventually they signed a new contract with PIAS. PIAS stands for 'Play It Again Sam'.
Over the next two years, the band worked on making their new album. In 2005, the album finally came out, called 'Another Day'. The album remained in the charts for well over a year and a half, which resulted in Racoon's breakthrough in the Netherlands.
In 2006, Racoon performed on the main stage at 'Pinkpop'. In 2006, Racoon was one of the most booked acts at festivals in the Netherlands. Racoon also appeared at De vrienden van Amstel LIVE in Ahoy in 2006 and 2007. In late 2007, the band started their tour in the United States. They supported 'The Lemonheads' for a month.
In 2008, a new album called 'Before You Leave' was released. In 2011, the single 'No Mercy' came out. Two months later, the album 'Liverpool Rain' was released.
In 2012, the band wrote their first Dutch-language song called 'Oceaan'. The song was produced for the film 'Alles Is Familie'. The song became a major hit in the Netherlands. In 2015, Racoon's sixth album appeared, called 'All In Good Time'. In 2017, the band released their last album with Stefan Kroon. The album is called 'Look ahead and see the distance'. Stefan was replaced by Maarten van Damme.
