Biography
The legendary frontman Michael Philip (Mick) Jagger knew guitarist Keith Richards since kindergarten. In the late nineteen-fifties they ran into each other again on a train platform in Dartford, Kent. The two became friends and formed a band: Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys, together with Dick Taylor and Brian Jones. After a short time Taylor left the band and was replaced by jazz drummer Charlie Watts. Bassist Bill Wyman completed the line-up.
They initially performed mainly in clubs, such as those of Alexis Korner. In 1963 The Rolling Stones signed a record contract with Decca Records, under the direction of manager Andrew Oldham. Their first single, Come On, a Chuck Berry cover, was released that same year.
About the music
The Stones achieved their first real success with the single Not Fade Away (1964). Their debut album, simply titled The Rolling Stones, followed quickly and produced hits such as I Wanna Be Your Man. More albums followed, including 12 X 5 and The Rolling Stones, Now!, with iconic hits like Time is on my Side and Heart of Stone.
In 1965 the band broke through definitively on the world stage with the megahit (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, renowned for Keith Richards' legendary riff. Other successful albums from this period were Out of Our Heads, December's Children (and Everybody's) and notably Aftermath (1966), featuring hits such as Under My Thumb and Lady Jane.
In the mid-sixties, the atmosphere within the band shifted. Richards and Jones began using heavy drugs, which resulted in experimental albums such as Their Satanic Majesties Request, inspired by psychedelic rock. Despite less commercial success, this album produced classics like She's a Rainbow and 2000 Light Years From Home.
The album Beggars Banquet (1968) marked a return to their roots with major hits such as Sympathy for the Devil and No Expectations. Meanwhile, things were deteriorating for Brian Jones, who was dismissed in 1969 and died tragically shortly after.
In the eighties, conflicts intensified between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, particularly due to Jagger's solo ambitions. Still, they scored hits, such as Start Me Up and Waiting on a Friend from the successful Tattoo You (1981). After several weaker albums and conflicts, bassist Bill Wyman decided to leave the band in 1989. He was replaced by session musician Darryl Jones.
From the nineties onwards, the Stones made an impressive comeback with albums such as Voodoo Lounge (1994) and Bridges to Babylon (1997), which featured hits like Love Is Strong and Anybody Seen My Baby?. The successful compilation 40 Licks (2002) led to a massive world tour, followed by the album A Bigger Bang (2005), including their biggest tour ever.
In 2008 the band signed a new record deal with Universal. The documentary and live album Shine A Light by director Martin Scorsese put them back in the spotlight.
After more than 60 years, The Rolling Stones remain active and are regarded worldwide as one of the most influential rock bands of all time.
